CHICAGO INTERNATIONAL
DOCUMENTARY FESTIVAL
AUDIENCE AWARD GOES TO METALLICA: SOME KIND OF MONSTER
New York, April
27, 2004 Acclaimed documentary filmmakers Joe Berlinger and Bruce
Sinofsky's exhilarating film METALLICA: SOME KIND OF MONSTER was awarded
the prestigious audience award at the Chicago International Documentary
Film Festival. Joe Berlinger and Bruce Sinofsky, who met while working
for the legendary Maysles brothers, are among the leading American documentarians
of their generation. BROTHER¹S KEEPER, their first feature-length
collaboration, launched them into the public spotlight winning numerous
accolades and awards. It was their follow-up, PARADISE LOST, which brought
the filmmakers together with their recent subjects, Metallica, for the
first time. Since then, they have continually explored American culture
and its underbelly.
Three years in the
making, the new film from Berlinger and Sinofsky provides a fascinating,
in-depth portrait of the most successful heavy metal band of all time,
as they faced monumental personal and professional challenges while
recording their first studio album of original songs in five years.
In the tradition of such seminal music documentaries as DON¹T LOOK
BACK and GIMME SHELTER, METALLICA: SOME KIND OF MONSTER trades rock-star
posing for truthful introspection, and revealing an intimate portrait
of the individuals behind a legendary band and their unique creative
journey. It also offers some monster performances.
METALLICA: SOME
KIND OF MONSTER premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January to
sold-out crowds. The film will be released in theatres this summer by
IFC Films. For more information on the film, please visit www.somekindofmonster.com.
Nearly one hundred
programs of the 2nd Chicago International Documentary Festival were
seen by over 14,000 viewers. The Audience Award given by the CIDF Audience
Jury Panel consists of $1,000 in cash and original sculpture plaque.
