Mid-Dance
Confessions
by
Ray Pride
More than
a couple of Sundance sins got committed yesterday: For one,
I saw Once twice; who sees a movie twice at a film
festival when there's so much else possibly to see and do?
But the simple beauty of John Carney's romantic musical
was even more powerful a second time around and it was truly
heartening to see the fillum with a public audience, rather
than at a presser for journos as I did on the first go.

Whose
Vision Of History Is It, Anyway?
by
David Poland
Sundance
ended as it started for me... with Brett Morgan. It
started with his film, Chicago 10, on opening night
and ended with a chat over orange juice in The Eating Establishment.
(It's funny how we all develop our Sundance habits... I am
a Morning Ray person, Brett, apparently, an Eating Establishment
guy.)

Slamdance 1: Lost and Found and Kevin Bacon
by
Justine Elias
What they say
is heartbreaking. "Look at how cute we were," remarks
one young woman, who with her brother, suffered unspeakable treatment
by the cult's leaders. "No wonder we got abused."
The cult once
bended toward the rapey, criminal enterprise delusions of its leader--but
the followers -- now calling themselves The Family International
are now merely an isolationist religious cult.

S07 Review: Once
by
Ray Pride
Boy meets girl,
how hard can that be? Sometimes a movie leaves you with such a warm
feeling, you just want to point people in the general direction
of its reflected light, and not write about it, not describe modest
virtues in a way that oversells genuine heart and soul.

You Ain't Nothin' But
A Hound, Dog
by David Poland
The most controversial film of the festival, Hounddog, turns out to be not very controversial at all... except as an example of how to court controversy and then disappoint audiences. For a movie that has inspired a lot of conversation, it seems to me to be a movie not worthy of much talk at all.

Review
Joshua
by David Poland
I cant
say I disliked the film. But like so many films at Sundance this
year, it lacks a clear focus. The question of whether Joshua is
evil or misunderstood in the midst of the arrival of a stressful
second child is the kind you answer at the end of a second act (or
earlier) so you can make a movie about what it means. Instead, we
get teased until the end. (No, I will not reveal the answer.)

Is
It Already Over?
by David Poland
Who is the happiest
group at Sundance '07?
P-Ricey, NUtley
& Slammin' Stevie G, the senior staff of Fox Searchlight, which
has the best liked film at the festival so far, The Savages,
and also grabbed a surprising PGA award from across state lines
on Saturday night. It's enough to make you positively giddy.

The
Chicago 10 Strikes Out
by David Poland
I wish I could
tell you that Sundance '07 opened with a bang and not a whimper.
But alas...
Brett Morgan
and Nanette Burstein made a couple of great documentaries
together, On The Ropes and The Kid Stays In The Picture.
The first was rather traditional... great story well told. And it
was Oscar nominated. The second combined an exercise in style with
a solid gold narrative. And it should have been Oscar nominated.

The
Hot Button
Little
Red Riding Hood Goes To Sundance
by
David Poland
Once upon a time, in the sun-drenched land of LA, lived a lovely
young lass named Red. She was a somewhat familiar figure in the
land. A happy marriage to someone else in the industry, a smattering
of high quality, but low profile work over the years, kids in the
right showbiz schools. She wasn't very showy, this Red, in spite
of her name. But she was proud and honest and still loved getting
into work that made her feel like she was contributing the world.
