Because
You Didn't Ask
by Patricia Vidal
Well,
its that Sundance time of year again! Another year of smart
girls, horny guys and gay men spending all their time moisturizing.
Best of all, my snow boots arent going to get stained by
any f**king snow. People claim that they come here for the movies,
but I know better. They come here to find some people they can
fantasize about having sex with when they get back home.

In
America
by David Poland
After a "tentative title" screening at
the Toronto Film Festival, Jim Sheridan's In America
has settled on a name and knocked out the kinks before re-premiering
at Sundance this week. I'm not sure whether I agree with Fox Searchlight's
current strategy on this film, scheduled to premiere in theaters
in early summer. In America is a classic underdog Oscar-type
movie, sure to be lost on moviegoers anxious for summer thrills,
but a serious contender if handled just right. From Sheridan to
his daughters, who collaborated on the screenplay, to Declan
Quinn's beautiful cinematography to Djimon Hounsou,
who finally gets a role worthy of his weighty on-screen presence,
to Samantha Morton, who will, eventually, be appreciated
as movie royalty. .

People
I Know
by David Poland
If you want one clear distinction between the Toronto
International Film Festival and Sundance try this big-money
studio movies that turn up at Sundance can always be assumed to
be in trouble and a bit desperate. Toronto, which
has no pretense about being an independent fest, is less interested
in newcomers (at least ones who are not Canadian) and provides
a cushy promotional pad for studios. But if you are trying get
indie cred for your high-priced, big starred, sitting-on-the-shelf-gathering-dust
film, well, thanks for coming to the mountain, Al.

Golden
(Globes) Hangover
by David Poland
Two
obsessive compulsions dominate this period of the year. So, with
the Golden Globes out of the way, the second wave of Sundance
business starts today (Monday), as the mini-majors with Globe-al
interests (which seems like all of them lately) report to the
mountains (or back to the mountains)

Pride Unprejudiced

I’ve seen several documentaries
in advance, and among premieres, there’s a lot to consider in Sam
Green and Bill Siegel’s ambitious The Weather Underground,
which attempts to capture the political fire of a complicated era.
