BEST ACTOR

Comment
Jamie Foxx - Ray (GG/C-M)
The long-time frontrunner... he is very unlikely to be forgotten. Has to beat Spacey at the Globes to have a shot at winning the Oscar.
Javier Bardem - The Sea Inside (GG/D) The pressure is increasing on this, the smallest film and the only one not in English amongst the contenders. But it is pretty clearly the best male performance of the year, so...
Leonardo DiCaprio - The Aviator (GG/D) A tremedous performance in a hard-to-love movie... hard to imagine this slot going to Depp
Kevin Spacey - Beyond The Sea (GG/C-M) He sings, he directs, he writes, he produces, he caters, he gaffes, he scrubs the studio floors, he is becoming the irresistable force of the season
Clint Eastwood - Million Dollar Baby (GG/D) His first acting nomination ever? (Ed Note: Uh no... he was nominated for Unforgiven.) He owns this movie... if it's a Best Picture, he must get the nod

Additional Golden Globe Contenders (Drama) 2 of 4 likely
Johnny Depp - Finding Neverland A nice performance looking smaller and smaller
Don Cheadle - Hotel Rwanda A strong performance is a small film... and though no one wants to say it, he is "the other Black contender." Should win a critics group or two... may have to be satisfied with that.
Gael Garcia Bernal - The Motorcycle Diaries Two movies... a foreign language... a co-star here and a director in Bad Education that overshadow him... needs to shove Bardem out to have a shot
Liam Neeson - Kinsey A really fine performance, complex and incredibly challenging to maintain likeability. But Eastwood probably just ate his slot.
Sean Penn - The Assassination of Richard Nixon The profile is just too low on the film, the role of a man on the edge always seems easy, though Penn is sublime here... proabbly too late
John Travolta - A Love Song For Bobby Long Globes only... would be "one of those nods," though Travolta is quite good here playing against type
Additional Golden Globe Contenders (Comedy/Musical) 3 of 5 likely
Gerard Butler - The Phantom Of The Opera There is a split between those who adore the performance and those who claim he can't sing...
Paul Giamati - Sideways Another great performance... another likely Oscar snub for subtlety...
Jim Carrey - Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind With few comedy performances to choose from, even the absurdity of Eternal Sunshine running as a comedy probably won't keep Carrey from a Golden Globe nomination
Jim Carrey - Lemony Snicket's a Series Of Unfortunate Events A multi-character turn, but the family film tag combined with the Eternal compeition may ace him out of a mld here.
Adam Sandler - Spanglish He really has no business being on this list... but if the movie makes the late run, he is the guy
And...
Kevin Bacon - The Woodsman
Jeff Bridges - The Door In The Floor
Jim Caviezel - The Passion Of The Christ
Tom Cruise - Collateral

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR
Actor - Film
Comment
Thomas Haden Church - Sideways The feel good nominee... all Searchlight has to do is not blow it
Clive Owen - Closer Terrific audience pleasing performance in a movie that is going to split audiences
Patrick Wilson - The Phantom Of The Opera As with all things Phantom, a room divided, but should still make it
Peter Sarsgaard - Kinsey If the film fades, he could easily fade with it
Rodrigo De La Serna - The Motorcycle Diaries He needs to start making himself known in Hollywood or this nod goes away

Potential Alt Golden Globers
Morgan Freeman - Million Dollar Baby If the picture is as big with voters as it seems to be, a good performance could come along for the ride... may displace one of the above next week
Alan Alda - The Aviator Not really big enough or special enough for a nod
Mark Wahlberg - I Heart Huckabees People loved him, but hope is fading
Freddie Highmore - Finding Neverland If no Johnny, no Freddie
And...
William Sadler - Kinsey
Liev Schreiber - The Manchurian Candidate
