Monster Mash!

The tuss up between Alien vs. Predator vanquished the competition to lead weekend movie ticket sales with an estimated $38.8 million. The freshman class also included good grades for second place The Princess Bride 2: Royal Engagement with $22.8 million and a fourth place finish of $9.6 million for the Japanese anime feature Yu-Gi-Oh!

Still overall business was down roughly 7% from 2003's comparable frame when another classic confrontation - Freddy vs. Jason - was the leading audience magnet.

Sporting an instant classic of a tag line: Whoever Wins … We Lose, Alien vs. Predator was a marketing campaign that easily outstripped its product on a quality basis. While little attempt was made to broaden the picture's appeal to young men, that target crowd responded significantly. With some venues bowing with Midnight screenings, Saturday business experienced a steep 25% drop and Sunday is expected to suffer in similar fashion. And while the Monster duo won't hit 6-figures, its performance is well above expectations.

Regardless of where Fox places in the summer scoreboard, it's difficult to argue a better studio record this season. Its blockbuster titles The Day After Tomorrow and I, Robot performed to expectation while Dodgeball, Garfield and this weekend's AVP exceeded initial tracking projections.

The sequel to The Princess Diaries bowed Wednesday and entered the weekend with an impressive 2-day gross of $14.2 million. Its additional $22.8 million was on par with the original but saw some of its potential sapped by the Wednesday jump-start so next weekend will provide a better indication as to whether chapter two will have comparable longevity.

It's fair to say that Yu-Gi-Oh! has the dubious distinction of generating the biggest opening for a film with an unfathomable title. It experienced 30% erosion from opening day biz and shapes up as a fast burner with a strong profit center in ancillaries.

Weekend business should tally to close to $140 million for a timely boost of 22% from seven days earlier but dipped once again from 2003 levels. A year ago Freddy vs. Jason bowed comparably to this weekend's leader and the combination of Open Range and Uptown Girls was roughly equal to Princess Diaries 2. However, the rest of the field was deeper and more vibrant than the 2004 class.

The second weekend of Collateral took a comparatively modest 37% hit and The Bourne Identity is emerging as the summer's best heat resistance title. Conversely, The Village experienced another sizeable downturn and came up just shy of a $100 million cume.

Among the specialized debuts, the dour drama We Don't Live Here Anymore had an impressive near $14,000 average from seven exclusives. It expands to 10 markets next weekend.

There was fair response of $160,000 from 51 venues for Kyon Ho Gaya Na Pyar on the Bollywood circuit but other limited bows displayed little dynamism. The non-fiction Tom Dowd & the Language of Music was eyeing about $15,500 from 10 theaters while Lions Gate's acquisition of the Aussie offbeat comedy Danny Deckchair generated a wan $9,800 from four locations. Lions Gate's nail biter Open Water added just eight screens but maintained a healthy $14,000 average and should display considerably more bite when it expands next weekend
