Indie: it's academic
The Christian Science Monitor's David Sterritt surveys academe to define "indie", in a thumbsucker quoting the likes of Peter Brunette, and Ray Carney: "But what does "indie" really mean - assuming it means anything at all in this age of globalized mass media? Opinions are varied, as are the movies grouped in its ever larger tent." (Please note the scary photo of Carney in red bowtie, propped up in front of a 16mm project, as well as the distinction that Newmarket Films is "an adventurous but minor company" and Sterritt's invocation of the word "humongous.")
