Attendees via Exclusive LidRock Interactive CDs
ATLANTA (October
18, 2004) - The Convex Group, a media and entertainment holding company
that includes LidRock and HowStuffWorks, today announced the acquisition
of Flexplay Technologies, Inc., a privately held developer of limited-play
DVD technology. Flexplay is a patented technology developed in collaboration
with GE Advanced Materials that makes DVDs unreadable 48 hours after
being removed from a specially-sealed package. Once the package is opened,
the movie can be watched an unlimited number of times within the 48-hour
window. This creates a viable alternative to traditional rental models,
with multiple benefits to the consumer including no returns, no late
fees, and perfect-quality playback on any standard DVD player. In addition,
because the unopened package has a one-year shelf life, Flexplay is
a DVD-on-demand solution that offers consumers a compelling combination
of affordable price points and "buy anywhere, watch anytime"
convenience.
Convex will use
the Flexplay platform to enable new mass-market distribution of high-quality
movie and game content, including major studio releases in sequence
with traditional DVD sell-through as part of its DVD and home video
windows as well as original product,
premiered on Flexplay.
The first original motion picture to be nationally released on the Flexplay
platform is NOEL, a star-studded holiday drama that premiered recently
at the Toronto Film Festival. Directed by Chazz Palminteri (A Bronx
Tale, Bullets Over Broadway) and written by David Hubbard (Delivering
Milo), the film stars Oscar( winner Susan Sarandon (Dead Man Walking,
Thelma & Louise), Penelope Cruz (Head in the Clouds, Vanilla Sky)
and Paul Walker (The Fast and the Furious, Pleasantville).
Featuring striking
cinematography by Oscar( winner Russell Carpenter (Titanic) and music
by eight-time Oscar( winner Alan Menken (The Little Mermaid, Beauty
and the Beast, Aladdin), NOEL has all the makings of a holiday classic.
Through an inspiring, contemporary story of hope, forgiveness, love
and redemption, NOEL delivers the true spirit of the holiday season.
The film was produced by Neverland Films, with Jonathan Dana serving
as executive producer and Bart Rosenblatt, Al Corley, Eugene Musso and
Howard Rosenman serving as producers. "Over the past few years
we have been assembling proprietary assets to enhance the entertainment
experience. Flexplay creates new opportunities for content providers
to reach more people, retailers to offer new products, and consumers
to have more choices - all of which reflect our company's core strategy
and mission," said Jeff Arnold, CEO of The Convex Group. "We
are very excited to launch a film of NOEL's caliber on this platform,
as we believe this unique strategy will enable more people to experience
it."
NOEL director Chazz Palminteri added, "What is most important to
me is the message of the film. It's a movie about hope; a movie about
miracles that touches people of all ages, from all walks of life and
in all circumstances. And in this day and age, I think we all need a
miracle. The story of NOEL will make people feel good inside as they
reflect on the hope of the holiday season, and I am excited by the unique
approach we are taking with its release."
The Convex Group's distribution of NOEL marks the first "trimultaneous"
release of a feature film, designed to offer consumers multiple viewing
choices while also generating awareness about Flexplay. This innovative
distribution strategy extends through the 2004 holiday season, including
a limited nationwide theatrical release beginning November 12; a special
one-night-only airing on Turner Network Television (TNT) on Sunday,
Nov. 28, at 8 p.m. (ET/PT); and simultaneous online availability of
the NOEL on Flexplay DVD exclusively through Amazon.com.
Amazon.com customers can pre-order the NOEL on Flexplay DVD starting
today with orders shipping to customers around the third week of November.
Amazon.com is offering the NOEL on Flexplay DVD for $4.99, and the title
is eligible for Amazon's Super Saver Shipping option, which is free
on qualifying orders over $25.
"TNT's reach, brand identity as the destination for drama and marketplace
leadership make it the ideal network television partner to join The
Convex Group in this innovative distribution strategy to bring NOEL
to the widest possible audience," said Steve Koonin, executive
vice president and chief operating officer of TNT and TBS. "Hosting
the television premiere of the new feature NOEL furthers TNT's position
with viewers as the leader in dramatic film entertainment and reinforces
the network's reputation within the industry as a high-value partner
in creative marketing and promotion. We are pleased to play a key role
in the success of NOEL and the Flexplay platform debut."
"All of us involved in the film flipped for this innovative approach
to marketing and releasing the film from the moment we heard about it,"
said Zvi Howard Rosenman, who first started developing NOEL five years
ago. "I've produced many 2,000-screen studio pictures before, but
I've never seen an approach as creative as this one, on all levels."
A broad mix of
companies are participating in the launch of Flexplay and NOEL. TNT,
Amazon.com, LidRock, 1800Cheapseats and HowStuffWorks are all launching
high-impact, integrated promotional campaigns to drive broad awareness
and adoption. Examples include proprietary in-theatre marketing through
millions of LidRock interactive CD-ROMs, featuring exclusive NOEL footage,
topping fountain beverages at over 500 theatres nationwide; an extensive
on-air promotional campaign reaching hundreds of millions of consumers
on TNT; and a combination online and grassroots campaign by 1800Cheapseats.com,
with a copy of
NOEL on Flexplay offered to anyone that purchases an airline ticket
during the holidays.
"We have focused on creating a marketing and distribution plan
that complemented the innovative nature of our overall effort,"
said Dan Adler, chief strategic officer of The Convex Group. "It's
been an excellent example of a wide range of partners, on both the creative
and
business sides, coming together on an accelerated timeframe to drive
an outside-the-box approach to releasing a film and ensuring that the
broadest possible audience has the opportunity to be reached by its
heart-warming message."
