MPAA
Trying To Tag Solaris With R Rating
The
MPAA Ratings Board came back with an R rating on Steven Soderbergh's
Solaris on Monday. 20th Century Fox, distributing domestically, was
expecting a PG-13 for the space drama, which has been touted as a major
commercial player in the holiday movie season. The studio also maintains
serious Academy Awards aspirations for the film.
The
rating fight balances on two of Hollywood's most valued commodities,
George Clooney's left and right butt cheeks. The MPAA has pegged Clooney's
buttocks as the only image that stands between Solaris and a PG-13.
Fox is expected to appeal the ruling.
Female
frontal nudity, above the waist, has become accepted PG-13 fare, as
long as there is no touching. This standard goes as far back as 1985's
"Just One Of The Guys," in which Joyce Hyser bared her breasts
at the climax of the film.
According to on-set sources, the rear end in question
is actually Clooney's and not a stunt tuchus.
